The Souers Stroke Institute
Stroke care has been a critical service since we opened our doors, and each year we continue to expand and reach more individuals in our region. In January 1991, with the founding of the Souers Stroke Institute, we expanded our continuum of care even further. The Souers Stroke Institute offers significant advantages for patients with acute stroke and stroke-related disorders. We have developed specific stroke protocols in the emergency room to identify appropriate medication or surgical intervention. In addition, patients with any of the risk factors described on the opposite panel can benefit from an Institute evaluation and appropriate stroke prevention recommendations.
The Souers Stroke Institute offers a comprehensive rehabilitation service for patients and families. Through the PremierCare Neurorehabilitation Unit, individually designed therapies are implemented to maximize the patient's recovery in cooperation with the patient's referring physician. Depending on the patient's need, physical, occupational and speech therapy, as well as vocational and family counseling services are available.
The Code Stroke Team
The Code Stroke Team is activated when a patient exhibiting symptoms of stroke is referred to SLUCare neuro-specialist at Saint Louis University Hospital. This multidisciplinary team of physicians with expertise in critical care of strokes, stroke neurology and stroke rehabilitation, is supported by consulting medical and surgical teams of cardiologists, neurosurgeons, vascular surgeons, neuroradiologists, emergency medical specialists, nurse specialists and technicians.
