The doors to Saint Louis University Hospital first opened in 1933, operating under the name of Firmin Desloge Hospital. Initially, the hospital was founded by the Sisters of Saint Mary and overtime came under the sole operation of the Jesuits of Saint Louis University. Tenet Healthcare Corporation purchased Saint Louis University Hospital in 1998 and continues to uphold the commitment to providing quality innovative care to patients. Since the beginning, Saint Louis University Hospital has served as the teaching hospital for the Saint Louis University School of Medicine and Saint Louis University School of Nursing. This has established the hospital's roots in a culture of knowledge, compassion and excellence.

From this community of healing, Saint Louis University Hospital has seen many innovations over the years. With the expert care of SLUCare physicians, the clinical practice of the physicians of Saint Louis University, many medical breakthroughs in organ transplantation, cardiac surgery and treatment of brain and lung disease have been pioneered at the hospital.

As a certified Stroke Center of Excellence by the Joint Commission, Saint Louis University Hospital further extended its expertise to the community through the creation of the MidAmerica Stroke Network. The Network is a collaborative system of hospitals that work together to deliver quality stroke care throughout the region. The MidAmerica Stroke Network provides member hospitals with 24-hour access to neuro-specialists, express transportation services for stroke patients, and state-of-the-art technology for consultative and diagnostic services. In turn, the Network's member hospitals must show a continued commitment to stroke services, resources and quality monitoring.
